Broforce Review

Digtal Crack

Video game news

magine a game that channeled everything we loved about the action movies from the 80s and 90s. Visualize a game that took the theory behind The Expendables and ramped it up to 11. Now imagine that this mythical game would have been a pixel art platformer that harnessed all of the goodness already mentioned.

Now stop imagining, grab a PS4 controller, and download Broforce this very instant!

I’ll admit, I did not join the Broforce wagon in the event the game made its debut using the pc and Mac recently. I have no excuse; I used to be remiss. But when Sony offered mafia wars via PlayStation Plus, I had to jump in. The result continues to be mad fun personally. I almost severed my ties with Digital Crack due to all the multiplayer agro, but we had been having too much fun to be mad!

The premise behind Broforce is straightforward: you are a bro, an über-masculine character modeled after the action movie stalwarts of the 80s and 90s. What they are are parodies of those well-known action heroes: Rambro, Brommando, B.A. Broracus, as well as the not-masculine-but-still-badass Ellen Ripbro. You fight terrorists, rescue bro teammates, and destroy my way through sight in pursuit of your ultimate goal: liberating the world of baddies!

The overall game is a pixel art-themed platform shooter which can be described as Contra on steroids. You guide your bro through the levels, blowing up baddies and rescuing comrades. The controls are tight and every movement is fluid. Interactions with the environment may seem unforgiving, but you are fair. If you fall of the edge or get crushed by a block, you were almost certainly at fault.

Along the way, you reach checkpoints where you raise the American flag (FUCK YEA!) and undertake bosses. Every time you rescue a bro or POW, you assume the role of a different bro. Each bro has different abilities; Brominator has a minigun, while Bronan the Barbarian wields swords. The mix in bros and weapon sets is awesome.

Playing alone is a superb experience, but it’s in multiplayer the location where the game becomes a truly visceral experience. There’s nothing like the “fun” of progressing via a level, only to have one of your fellow bros to throw a grenade and break the bottom under you, or light a flamethrower and immolate everything in front of you – including those explosive barrels you are standing next to. Friendships will likely be tested with this game!

Are there any drawbacks? Well, few. People who don’t like platformers will surely be turned off with that game. Also, certain areas will feel cheap having its kill areas if playing solo. Multiplayer about the PS4 is also pretty laggy, slowing the overall game down to a crawl at most inopportune moments.

Despite these niggles, Broforce can be a wonderfully chaotic experience. Devolver Digital is often a publisher that knows the way to deliver a high-octane experience, and also this game is no exception. In the event the prospect of controlling Bro Dredd or Brobocop inside a platform shooter will be your dream, this game is a foregone conclusion. If you exactly like to play a great game, or if you revel in playing chaotic games with friends, the bros are waiting to scratch that itch.
